Amara
by Steven
A girl lost her way. A woman learned to face her past.
Amara Nakamya is the first in her family to go to university. Her mother sold the family land and a goat to pay the fees, and Amara promised herself she would not waste a shilling.
Then she starts counting. The phones, the cars, the parties, everything other students seem to have. A kind man offers to help, and she says yes. Then another. Then more. Every one of them promises her a good life.
When the promises are tested, not one of them holds. Alone, afraid and far from home, Amara has to find out who she is without them.
Nathan is poor, funny and patient. He shares his rolex and his charging socket and asks what she thinks. He is the first person who wants to know the girl she is when she is not trying to impress anyone. And that is the person she is most afraid to show.
A story about money, shame and family. It asks whether a person can make terrible choices and still deserve love.
Mature themes: sexual content, abortion, and thoughts of suicide. 18+.
